Personal Development

It’s ironic (and never fails).  God always brings a message that is relative to my current state-of-mind.

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been deep into this book called Dynamic Thought by Henry Thomas Hamblin.  Specifically, I’m at a point that focuses on giving your best and expecting the best to come back to  you.

Well, on Wednesday night (the finally night of our Missions Conference), Dr. Ricky Dunsford, EVP Rock of Ages Ministry, brings a message from the 35th chapter of the book of Genesis.

In this chapter, God sends Jacob to Bethel, purges his house of idols, and has Jacob build an altar there in Bethel.

The Word of God goes through the first 15 verses of this chapter describing Jacob and the action he is taking.  However, in verse 8 the Word of God makes a little pitstop to describe something that happened.

Genesis 35:8 says, “But Deborah Rebekah’s nursed died,…”

The Preacher thought that was a bit strange that God would get sidetracked to mention this event in the midst of purging Jacob’s house.

Who was Deborah?  Simply, someone who instinctively worked to the benefit of Jacob and his house.  Someone who never complained, but did the heavy lifiting.  Someone that gave her best, and God recognized it!

Not a lot is said about Deborah.  But I think it says a lot that God mentioned her here.  It makes me think… is there a “Deborah” in my life?

Dr. Dunsford went on to tell how his wife has sacraficed much over the 29 years of their ministry to support him as he traveled the world ministering to those in need of Christ.

If you look-up the word “Deborah” in the Hebrew it relates to the word “bee” or more specifically to its instincts to continuously work to meet the needs of others.

Do you have someone in your life like Deborah?  Have you had someone in your life like Deborah?  Are you a Deborah (that goes for you men as well)?

We may not all be the one in charge, but we can certainly be the one dedicated to doing our best for the whole.
