We all have tremendous potential, and we all are blessed with gifts.

Yet, one thing that holds all of us back is some degree of self-doubt.

It’s not so much the lack of technical information that holds us back, but more the lack of self-confidence.

Some are affected more than others.

As a Christian, I sometimes find myself doubting my abilities.

Or better yet, doubting if I can reach for and obtain the things I want!

Not only do I doubt my ability, but I even find myself questioning my worthiness!

Then I come to myself and think how God desires to give me the best this life has to offer.

Especially when I put forth my best effort trusting in his goodness and mercy!

Numbers 13 is a great chapter in the Bible.

It’s a clear illustration of what happens when we loose faith and confidence in the Word of God.

It’s a clear illustration of self-doubt even when God has clearly laid out the path!

It’s all summed up in verse 33 of chapter 13 when the people said, “…and we were in our OWN sight as grasshopper…”

Self-doubt will paralyze you.

Self-doubt kept an entire generation from realizing the promises of God!

Vast areas of scripture will never be meaningful to us unless we go through the experiences for which they give insight.

It was for this reason that God allowed all of His servants in scripture to experience conflicts, and it is for this same reason that we go through them as well.

The basis for this is in Proverbs 1:23, “Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words to you.”

Even though David knew his conflicts and problems to be a direct result of his own sin, he was able to realize and say, “It is good for me that I have afflicted that I might learn thy statutes.” (Psalm 119:71)

The best response we should have to our conflicts and problems is to read through our Bibles.

Reading about the servants of God throughout the scriptures and visualizing their conflicts and problems in light of what we are possibly experiencing in our lives helps to realize that… “There hath no temptation taken you but such is common to man…” (1 Cor. 10:13)

And that… “Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

Allow your circumstances to drive you to God’s Holy Word.

God suggests that each of us maintain a periodic program of self-examination.

“For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” (1 Cor. 11:31)

“But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.” (1 Cor. 11:32)

“For whom the Lord loveth he chaseteneth…” (Heb. 12:6)

You know, when things are going well for us we are not easily movtivated to this activity.

But when a major problem or conflict in our lives arises and are spirit is grieved, we have the most effective motiviation to search out the inner motives, actions, words, and attitudes of our hearts.

A thorough self-examination can be a tremendous benefit during a problem time.

It would easily help us to identify why we fell in the first place.

It’s more times than not, that we ask ourselves… “why do bad things happen to good people?”

Today, I quickly want to address four things to think about as we begin a 5 part series on “How To Get The Greatest Benefit From Your Problems.”

Four points to consider as we move forward.

1. Most of us want quick solutions to our problems, but God wants to make sure that all His disciplines for character development in us and those around us are accomplished before He removes the problems.

2. He is also more concerned that the right procedures be followed in solving the problems than that the problems are actually resolved. It is the process of solving our problems that constitutes the most meaningful chapters of our life message and becomes the greatest help to other people.

3. We all want to get out from under the pressure of our problems, but God wants to use that pressure to motivate us to a greater level of spiritual maturity than we would otherwise have achieved.

4. Often our present problems are the results of past disobedience to the initial promptings of the Holy Spirit. Now God is using these problems to apply the pressures we need for complete obedience.

If we fail to gain these benefits from our present problems He will only have to raise up new problems.
